Many dogs can learn an activity like housebreaking through constant repetition and with the mindful training of their owner. However a Shih Tzu needs to not only accept the activity as something it does not mind doing but it also must make it a habit and that is the most difficult thing about housebreaking a Shih Tzu. Only a Shih Tzu can teach itself habits, you just have to show it what you want and hope it understands.

At some point some Shih Tzu owners think that Shih Tzu paper training may work in their house breaking attempts.

With that being said some people still like to engage in Shih Tzu paper training as a part of housebreaking efforts and honestly that may do more harm than good. A Shih Tzu, for as intelligent as they are, can get confused very easily and if you have been engaged in the same housebreaking routine for months and then you suddenly change it that can cause many problems for your dog.

Even then you need to understand that a Shih Tzu is probably not going to react to paper training like any other breed of dog would react to it. It is so vitally important to be sure that you are doing paper training only after trying conventional housebreaking methods for at least six months.

It is assumed that you have established a living area for your Shih Tzu in your home because that is step number one in housebreaking. If the Shih Tzu is going in areas just around the living area then try expanding its living area to include the soiled areas and then move its bedding close to, but not on, the soiled area. Then resume normal housebreaking activities. A Shih Tzu will not soil where it sleeps so maybe it will understand going outside better if you keep forcing it to sleep near soiled areas.

Shih Tzu paper training should almost not be necessary if you are engaged in the other correct ways to housebreak your Shih Tzu but if paper training is a route you want to take then move their living area to encircle the area they are soiling the most. Cover the soiled area with layers of papers and praise the dog when it uses the papers. Keep the papers clean but keep a small amount of soiled paper with the fresh paper so the dog knows it is okay to use them. Then slowly start moving the whole thing towards the door until the dog associates outside with bathroom activities.

You will probably need to keep your Shih Tzu confined to its living area for a while but remember that the Shih Tzu can get bored after only a couple of hours and they can get confused if they are confined for too long.

That is why you should be taking your Shih Tzu out every 45 minutes when you are home and keep them confined when they are not being taken outside. The Shih Tzu can be frustrating but stay with it if you want to train them right.

About the Author:

About the author: Rebecca Simpson is a passionate lover of the Shih Tzu and owns a popular website that can show you how to have a happy, healthy and well behaved Shih Tzu. Rottweiler puppies will live to be more than ten years old. During the next ten years you may experience a lot of life changes, and your Rottweiler will be with you during all of them. Don't choose a Rottweiler puppy in haste. Take your time and make sure you and the dog are a good match before you decide on a Rottweiler puppy.

Rottweiler puppies are so cute and you'll want to get the first puppy you pick up. Think it over, though, take it slowly and use an objective method of choosing your Rottweiler puppy. Getting a dog is a big commitment, and you shouldn't choose Rottweiler puppies in haste.

Plan on having your Rottweiler puppy for at least ten years. That's quite a commitment; you want to make sure you get a healthy Rottweiler puppy that will mesh with your personality, socialize well and respond well to obedience training. If you get a dog from a reputable Rottweiler breeder, you have a better chance of getting a high quality dog without physical problems than if you get a puppy from a retail pet seller.

Rottweiler puppies cannot be Orthopedic Foundation for Animals certified until they are at least two years old, but preliminary examinations can be done when the puppies are four months old. If both parents are certified, the chances are good that a puppy will also pass the certification.

Diseases to check for include: Elbow dysplasia, because the Rottweiler is ranked second on the list of one hundred breeds most likely to suffer from elbow dysplasia; cardiac problems and hip dysplasia, because the Rottweiler is ranked number thirty on the list of breeds most likely to have cardiac disease or hip dysplasia; Rottweiler puppies are ranked fifty-fifth most likely to have patellar luxation, so the risk is relatively low.

Once you have assured yourself that the Rottweiler puppies have parents that are healthy and of good temperament, watch each dog in the litter individually to see what each dog's personality is like. Rottweiler puppies are bred to be pretty much the same one generation after another ? that's why people like purebred dogs, so they know what to expect ? but one puppy may be more timid or aggressive than another, and it's up to you to decide what kind of personality you want your dog to have.

Rottweilers are bred to have consistent characteristics one generation after another. One reason people like to get purebred dogs so much is because they know what to expect with a purebred dog. If you have a strong preference for a male over a female, or female over male, that will help make your choice of Rottweiler puppies even easier. One puppy in the litter may be more timid, shy, or aggressive than the others, and it's up to you to decide what kind of dog's personality suits you. Visit the litter a few times before you decide what puppy you want. Remember, this is a big decision. Watch the Rottweiler puppies playing with each other, and look for an alert puppy that gets along well with its brothers and sisters.

Whichever Rottweiler puppy you choose, make your purchase conditional on the puppy's passing a health examination and take the puppy to your veterinarian as soon as you can after you take possession of it.

Top 6 Dog Behavior Problems and Solutions

Are you tired of your dog behavior problems?

I found an excellent article written by Rita on dog behavior problem. Digging

Dogs dig because of hunting instinct, nesting, hiding possessions or to gain access of something. It is a reward based training method that works well because it clearly shows a dog what he’s doing right and rewards him for it, rather than correcting him when he does something wrong.

Clicker training uses the principles of operant conditioning, which is the same techniques used to train seals and dolphins at Sea World. Whatever behavior is rewarded is repeated. In simple terms, whenever your dog performs the correct behavior, he earns a reward, and this makes him more likely to repeat that behavior.. To start, sit down with your dog and spend some time just clicking and treating. Every time you click, give your dog a treat, so he soon learns that the click means a reward is coming. When your dog cocks his head or pricks his ears when you click, he has connected the click with the treat. Then you can start to use it for training.

When your dog does something you want him to do, for example, sitting, click immediately his bottom hits the ground, and then treat. It won’t take very long before your dog understands the game, and is enthusiastically sitting in order to earn the treat. You can use clicker training to teach any behavior to your dog, and your dog will have lots of fun learning.

The great thing about clicker training is that the timing is so precise. You can specifically and accurately mark the behavior you want and by giving your dog such precise information, you make it easier for him to repeat it, and earn the reward. If you make a mistake, the worst you do is give your dog a free treat.

Clicker training can be used also to teach your dog tricks. Roll over, shake hands, and beg are just a few behaviors that can be taught using this method. You just have to click what you want and follow up with a treat, and you can have lots of fun teaching your dog new behaviors.

Certified Pet Dog Trainer

Why you should choose a Certified Pet Dog Trainer?

Certified trainer has the knowledge and expertise to make your investment in dog training safe, effective, and even fun. Vets today can offer latest treatments like radiation therapy to kidney transplants for your dog. That means once-fatal conditions are now treatable at costs ranging from $1,000 to more than $5,000.

2. Vets have access to increasingly sophisticated and costly diagnostic tools, such as MRIs. Such screenings not only boost the cost of tests but often detect problems that once would have gone unnoticed and untreated. These expensive tools and procedures have helped create health care inflation in the pet doctor world.

Is buying pet dog insurance must?

Pet dog insurance coverage can cost $2,000 to $6,000 over the life of an average dog, and the chances are remote that you'll ever require to use that much for treatment of your dog. If you're the type of person who would spend thousands of dollars on medical care of your dog , a proper pet dog insurance must for you.

Top 5 facts on pet insurance

1. In 1995 only 1 % peple in USA used to have pet insurance and now the number increased to 3%.

2. Insurers have teamed with the American Kennel Club and Petco Animal Supplies to offer the insurance, and more than 1,600 companies -- including Office Depot and Google -- provide the coverage as an optional employee benefit.

3. Deductibles, exclusions and surcharges
The oldest pet insurer, Veterinary Pet Insurance, has seen its revenue climb at a 26.8% annual rate since 1998. The company, which has about 71% of the U.S. pet insurance market, had gross sales of $149 million in 2007.

4. The policies typically have deductibles, co-pays and caps that limit how much will be paid out annually.

5. Only Embrace Pet Insurance, covers hereditary and chronic conditions. Other insurers excludes pre-existing problems and hereditary conditions, such as hip dysplasia in retrievers and German shepherds

aggressive dog behavior how to treat

Does your dog seldom listen to you?

Is dog aggression ruining your relationship with your dog?

You need to train your dog properly. Therefore, barking dogs can become "people problems." The two most common types of "anti-barking" laws are the multiple-household laws and the consecutive-disruption ordinances.

How to stop barking dogs

The first thing you need to do is determine when and for how long your dog barks, and what's causing him to bark. You may need to do some detective work to obtain this information, especially if the barking occurs when you're not home. If the main purpose of having a dog is security, barking dog will be helpful for you.

Your dog is barking because you have placed him in a situation in which it is more rewarding for him to bark than it is for him to be quiet. You can take help from barking dog trainers and train your puppy using barking dog training aids. I found sit stay fetch by Danniel is an excellent resource to learn how to stop a barking dog. You can read stop barking dog review.

Non barking dog breeds

There is no such non barking dog. But a constantly barking dog can also bring you unwanted noise and frustration. A trained pet with an occasional bark is the best pet solution for everyone.

Here are the types of anti bark collars. The preference of the owners on what to buy is in their decision.

The e-collars

The electronic bark collars or e-collars are anti bark collars which use static electricity as its correction tool.

When the dog starts to bark, vibrations are sent to the collar triggering the electric shock and making the dog realize that when he barks a shock is associated with it making it think otherwise. The dog collar comes in 6 adjustable intensities of the static shock. A beep will warn the dog before the shock will be done. The psychological training of cause and effect apply to all the anti bark collars.

Ultrasonic bark collars

This type of bark collar uses sound as its tool for the correction of the dog. The barking is tracked by the device in the collar and releases an ultrasonic sound which is irritating to the dogs making them stop barking or otherwise.

Anti bark collars come in different fitting designs for your dogs. They can carry it around, they can claim it, they can retrieve it (especially retrievers), and it's theirs. And, it feels good to them.

Depending on the breed you have, some dogs will kill the stuffed toys, some dogs will love it, sleep on it and snuggle with it. Retrievers will consistently have it in their mouth when you return home.

You can buy heap, right sized stuffed animals yard sales and give it to your dog. But, considering dog allergy problem, you should clean the stuffed toy properly. These toys are a very cheap alternative to expensive pet store toys.
Precaustion : Do not give toy which are stuffed with small, styrofoam beads because
dogs often rip open their stuffed toys, and the styrofoam beads could become a hazard to your dog.
I know of some big dogs that shake their stuffed toy to so much that they are actually killing it. If you have more than one dog watch that the other dog doesn't get hurt by the toy that is being shaken. It is easy to have your other dogs eye get punctured or hurt.

So to repeat the question, why do dogs like stuffed toys? Well, it seems that we all love stuffed toys. Adults have them, kids love them, cats play with stuffed mice, and dogs claim them to kill it, to claim it, or just to love it.
Are you facing challenge in dog potty training ?
Riti just published 12 easy to do puppy potty training tips at her site on dogtraining.

StopDogBarkingProblems

How to Solve Dog Barking Problems within 2 Weeks

Dog behavior problems can be quite traumatic for dog owners. Try to keep a daily log of your dog's vocalizations for two weeks. This will help you to identify and analyze the root cause of the dog behavior problems.

Was he barking or whining or howling? What was the time? What was happening at the time around the dog?

2. Dogs usually respond to discomfort or loneliness by whining and howling. Try to comfort your dog if he is disturbed by loud noise. If your dog feels uncomfortable with new people, don’t bring in too many new people at the same time. To avoid dog aggression towards children, introduce children carefully.

3. Once your dog is comfortable with situations at home, you need to take your dog out frequently to make him fully socialized.

4. If you are leaving your dog alone for a few hours, you should always leave around him his favorite toys, food and water. Keep some unwashed piece of your clothing lying around as your smell will keep him comforted. Don’t leave him alone for too long as that may lead to separation anxiety.

5. If the dog perceives a threat, he may respond by growling or barking. Encourage your guest to squat down and approach the dog slowly, and always use a calm voice on the dog.

6. You should start socializing a puppy right away. Puppies learn the tricks better. Catch them young before they show dog behavior problems.

If you can identify the cause of the dog barking problems, you can usually come up with a way to stop the dog from barking. However, you need loads of patience for this.

How to Stop Dog Barking with Effective Dog Training

If you want to solve your dog behavior problems, you can join a dog training class but it would put you back by a few hundred dollars.

I found an amazing dog training book – Sit Stay Fetch by Daniel Stephen. You should properly socialize your dog at a very early age, to people as well as to other dogs. Sometimes, hormonal medication will effectively treat this kind of dog aggression.

Territorial and Possessive Aggression: A dog may be territorially possessive over certain objects such as her bed, her home and her food bowl. He just loved to bark! We tried everything but could not solve his behavior problems like barking, growling etc. After several months of trying and several phone calls from Animal Control, we handed over the dog to another family.
I was heart broken. I decided to teach myself how to become an owner of a happy dog. I did a lot of research on why dogs bark, show aggressive behaviors and attended several dog training schools and classes to find the root cause of this problem.

Here are 6 tips to stop your dog from barking, growling, howling, and whining based on my experience and research.

1. You should keep a daily log of your dog's vocalizations for at two weeks. Analyze the type of vocalization (barking, whining, etc.); the time it occurred, what was happening at the time in the surroundings, what your family members were doing, and what the dog was doing. This will help you to identify the root cause of the dog behavior problems.

2. Whining and howling in a dog are usually signs of discomfort or loneliness. If loud noise is the cause of whining, try petting your dog when the noise begins. If your dog feels uncomfortable with new people, only bring in one or two new people at a time. To avoid dog aggression towards children, introduce children carefully.

3. Once your dog is comfortable with situations at home, you need to take your dog outside to make him fully socialized.

4. If you are leaving you dog for few hours, you should always leave favorite toys, food and water out for your dog. Hot tip – leave your clothing specially unwashed underwear because your smell makes him more comfortable. A dog that is left alone for many hours a day is likely to be unhappy. You dog may suffer from separation anxiety.

5. If the dog perceives a threat, he may growl or bark. Encourage your guest to squat down and approach the dog slowly with their hand extended out, palm face up and always use calm, quiet voice to the dog.

6. You should start socializing a puppy right away. Puppies learn the tricks better because they do not have any bad dog behavior problems.

If you can identify the cause of the aggressive behavior, you can usually come up with a way to stop the behavior from occurring. In this article, I shared with few of my favorite techniques on leash walking which I personally use.
If you follow these techniques, you will not make any complaints that your is pulling their walks. You will enjoy walk with your dog and you will not require any prong collars or other devices that supposedly stop pulling.
5 tips for leash walking for dog owners
Tip#1 Choosing the Right Approach for the Age of Your Dog
Puppies (0-6 mos.) With puppies, I've found the best method is to have a few steps of highly reinforced loose leash and attention followed by a lot of playing/sniffing/exploring.
Adolescence (6 mos. - 3 years) If you have an adolescent dog, you must have a place where they can exercise themselves. Expecting an adolescent dog to pay attention and walk nicely before he has had a chance to work off some of his energy is setting you both up for failure.
Adult dog (3+ years) This is when you can take long walks and reasonably expect your dog to walk quietly -- this is, if you have built a reinforcement history. On and off is still a nice concept, and adults still have exercise needs and still need to get the work out.
Tip #2: Never try to walk a dog that has been cooped up all day.
If your dog has been lying around waiting for you, let him burn off some of his energy before you take him for a walk. Throw a ball, play tug-o-war, or do something to calm him down before the walk.
Tip #3: Use a gentle leader.
One of the best collars on the market is the gentle leader head collar. It works by controlling your dog's head. When you control the head you can control the body, much the same as a horse bridle is used. They really are great collars.
Tip #4: Teach him where you want him to be.
Your dog does not know that he is supposed to be walking on your side. Spend some time using a lure. Put a little piece of food in your left hand and hold it close to your dog's nose. Have him follow the lure; reward him every five or six feet. As he gets better, go for longer and longer periods.
Tip #5: Don't let your dog's opposition reflex kick in.
When you apply pressure, your dog will resist with counter-pressure. If you pull back on the leash, he will resist and pull harder...opposition reflex. The secret to leash walking is always keeping the leash loose. Don't allow the leash to become tight. So, next time your dog starts to pull on his leash, shut up and walk away!
Recommended Resource: Sit Stay Fetch Dog Training Guide by Daniel. Common signs of dog aggression include growling, baring teeth, snarling, snapping and biting. The problem becomes critical when dog shows aggresion to its owner. Dog aggression towards children, other family members, owner and other dogs need to be handled very carefully.

Types of Dog Aggression

A dog may show more than one type of aggression.

Dominance aggression. Your dog may think that she is the alpha dog. There are dogs that have a greater predisposition for asserting themselves as predators. Male dogs and certain breeds have a greater tendency toward asserting their dominance over their territory, other dogs and people. The solution for this kind of dog is to get control quickly and establish your leadership through training.
Fear-based aggression. Dogs that are physically abused will build fear of that person and may react with defensive aggression one day. You should properly socialize your dog at a very early age, to people as well as to other dogs. Sometimes, hormonal medication will effectively treat the aggression in these dogs.
Territorial and Possessive aggression. A dog may be territorially aggressive over certain objects such as her bed, her home and her food bowl. Establishing your leadership and counter-conditioning this dog are essential. It is important to begin this training at a very early age.
What You Can Do When Your Dog Is Aggressive
When trying to deal with your dog's aggressive behavior, one of the first steps is to make sure there are no medical problems you are not aware of. You can spay or neuter your dog. Hormones are known to contribute to aggressive tendencies in intact dogs so it's more likely for them to show some kind of aggressive behavior.
Aggressive Dog Treatment
Get professional help from certified dog behavior consultant. Treatment is best handled by a professional dog trainer who has a lot of experience working with aggressive dogs.
Most aggressive dogs can be retrained under the right circumstances. Consult veterinarians or animal behaviorists for their opinions about whether your dog can be rehabilitated or should be put down.
Recommended Resources based on my personal experience:
I strongly recommend Sit Stay Fetch because they comprehensively cover all facets of dealing with dog aggression, dog food aggression and dog on dog aggression, plus many general dog ownership issues.
